Are you pregnant and considering your options? Your next step after a positive pregnancy test is to confirm your pregnancy through ultrasound. Ultrasound provides the information you need to help you determine which options are available. We can help.
What Is An Ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a common imaging technique used to confirm pregnancy. It uses sound waves to produce images of a pregnancy within the uterus.
At Alexandrina Pregnancy Center, we begin an ultrasound with our sonographer applying a gel-like substance to your abdomen. A hand-held device called a transducer is rubbed over the gel to help transmit sound waves. The echoes of the sound waves create an image of the inside of your abdomen on a monitor which the sonographer will “read” for you.
3 Reasons for an Ultrasound
1. Is Your Pregnancy Progressing?
It’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test result even though you have already miscarried as the pregnancy hormones don’t disappear right away from your body after a miscarriage.
The Mayo Clinic shares that up to 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage and this number is likely higher since many women miscarry before realizing they’re pregnant. An ultrasound is the only step that can confirm this complication and whether a pregnancy is progressing and healthy.
2. The Location of Your Pregnancy
Some pregnancies develop outside the uterus causing an ectopic pregnancy, which can be dangerous to a woman’s health if not addressed right away.
An ectopic pregnancy implants in the fallopian tubes leading to the uterus or some other part of the body which means it cannot grow normally. An ultrasound will confirm the location of your pregnancy so you can be sure.
3. How Far Along Are You?
To confirm this very important detail, an ultrasound is needed. Some women are surprised to learn they are much farther along than they thought.
An ultrasound will indicate how far along you are and what is available to you. Contact us today to begin pregnancy confirmation and move forward with the insight you need to make a confident pregnancy decision.
